Write a 10-row reflection on your own performance writing the IWA. What did you do well? if you had the opportunity to do it all over again, what would you do different? Identify your major challenges, etc.
My IWA was logically organized and well written, yet the topic itself was somewhat inadequate. Even though I was capable of finding relevant information to develop and convey the audience of my argument, discovering such data was hard. There weren't many reliable sources regarding this subject since the research question was too narrow, How does an individual's intellectual coefficient determine whether a person is denoted as a genius or not? In case I had the opportunity to do it all over again I would perhaps choose another topic, one where I would be able to obtain more information. Another possible solution would be to modify my research question, stay with the same overall idea yet use a different angle. Instead of specifically asking how does and intellectual coefficient determines a genius, perhaps I could have just ask what determine a genius?
The topic that I chose for my IWA was unknowingly also chosen by another student in the other class. However, we both brought our own personal writing style and in consequence, our papers were completely different. I enjoyed writing about this topic, the role of sleep in a person's intelligence, because I always find myself stuck between the importance of sleep and correctly doing homework. Because I am so tired, I cannot work the same and therefore hand a poor work to the teacher. I wanted to scientifically prove the prominent role that sleep plays in a person's fluid intelligence in order to link it with the stimulus package, and my thesis was correct. The major challenges I faced were choosing a topic that correctly linked with the stimulus package; I came up with this topic two days before the due date, so that was quite challenging. But once I focused, it became easier. I would definitely start before in the future, and maybe dedicate more time for further research.
I think that the best thing I did in the IWA is that I did plenty of research to absolutely cover all of the points and counter arguments that could be made against my position. I search for various perspectives so that I could have a better and improved overall idea in the topic. If I had the opportunity to do it all over again, maybe I would look for grammatical techniques which help me express what I am thinking more clearly. I had a lot of comments towards my IWA talking about the ideas being displayed not being that clear. I also got stuck in the searching of reliable sources for my paper. Even though I had a lot of sources, it was very difficult for me to find a website or news article which seemed to have true information. Health and body improvement related topics have a lot of scammers which try to sell you fake information to attract more customers, this is why it was difficult to find reliable sources.
Personally, the IWA was much easier to write than the IRR. I think what helped me do well was the fact that I thoroughly enjoyed the topic I chose. The research I did to have the evidence and claims was actually quite fun for me because I was learning things that interest me. If I had the chance to do it all over again, I would do more research on the last claim I have, which is that high creativity levels further the development of mental illnesses. I would like to understand the reasons why highly creative people tend to lean towards the psychopathological results of the different psychological tests made. I would've include much more information of this in my IWA if I had researched a little more. The major challenge was understanding all the psychological terms in order to explain them in my own words. Regarding the stimulus packet, I think that the article "The Science of a Genius" really helped me get inspiration to write my IWA and it helped a lot when I wanted to understand the link between creativity and madness. It was interesting to see how different people we regard as geniuses had some touch of craziness.
For me the realization of the IWA was more interesting and easier to create than the last assignment which was the IRR. First of all, because it was a topic of my interest (the mind) which I have a little of prior knowledge about, and always seek to have more information as well. Second of all, this time I had the opportunity to arrange my ideas on my own. I'm not saying I did not like working with my team, but it was something extra to which we had to work with, because each one of us had different opinions, ideas, points of view, and we spend a lot of time to agree with each other. Lastly, since we already had the last assignment, now we knew what we had to do. Although the assignment and topic is different the concept is the same. I think my ideas were clearer when I began my research this time than last time. However the big challenge in this assignment was reading the stimulus package. I find it very heavy and hard to understand, although doing the connection was not that hard, but we needed to understand it first.
Javier- For me, writing the IWA overall was really hard. I have a hard time focusing on writing and essay, especially this long and with resources that are very long, even though I completed the task on time. I think that the research that I did was one thing about this report that I did well. I was able to find a lot of reliable sources that talked about different aspects of the topic that I chose, which actually helped me a lot. I found various experiments and studies that proved my thesis correct, which is something that was beneficial for me. If I had the opportunity to do it all over again, I would have started earlier. I started the IWA very close to the deadline, so I was always in a rush to finish it and made some mistakes because of it. At the beginning, I had a really hard time finding information for my topic, and for about a week I had no progress, however when I modified my research question I was able to recollect sufficient information to get my IWA done correctly.
Alex A- Through the elaboration of my IWA, I seriously had a rough time. At first, I couldn't think of any topic that could relate to the stimulus package, that I could enjoy. I couldn't elaborate a question that could be explained within a larger context. After a series of constant research I chose to talk about a topic that could be easily divided in subtopics. Therefore, I chose nicotine enhancing cognition. Cognition is related to memory, and there are many types of memory. Due to this, I decided to find studies of nicotine enhancing each type of memory I was going to talk about. I believe that was the most intelligent thing I did, since it cover mainly the whole body of my paper. Not only because of that, but also because all the studies came from EBSCO (considering that in my IRR, I was encouraged to have EBSCO sources). If I had the opportunity of doing it all over again, I would've strived to find a topic that I could be interested in. I decided the topic regarding how much I could write about it, instead of what I was interested in. Consequently, I didn't enjoy working on my IWA, since there was no personal interest on continue learning about the topic.
My IWA was okay, at least it was much better than mi IRR. I managed to be more accurate with citations and resources, and organized the paper better. Nonetheless, I think that if one thing would have been different, I would have produced a much better paper. I had to choose one of the articles, I did not have the free will to choose what I would write about, as I had limited choices. Although the topic I choose was not particularly boring, if I had chosen my topic, I would have chosen something that I would be passionate about, not merely liking it. Still, programming is a very important part of the future, and I agree that talking about it was a good choice. The field is growing at an outstanding rate, but people need to learn that it is a bad idea to choose a career just because the job market is looking for it. This is a theme that has been very present in my life, because of college, but I thought that including it might be deriving too much from the topic.
Write a brief summary of each category expectations for IRR (Task #1) rubric. Please write an 8-rows reflection on the IRR (essays) you read (which one was a high, a medium or a low; what do you think about the topics; are they well written?; are the sources reliable and relevant enough?; what about conventions?).
