Write a brief summary of each category expectations for IRR (Task #1) rubric. Please write an 8-rows reflection on the IRR (essays) you read (which one was a high, a medium or a low; what do you think about the topics; are they well written?; are the sources reliable and relevant enough?; what about conventions?).

ReplyDeleteUnderstand and Analyze Context Row: The research question should be clear and specific. However it also needs to be complex and well thought in order to have a wide variety of reliable sources.
ReplyDeleteUnderstand and Analyze Argument Row: It is important for the student to understand what she/he researched and for him/her to be able to explain why were the sources, thus evidence, he/she chose the best to support his arguments.
Evaluate Sources and Evidence Row: Not only should the be able to demonstrate the credibility of the sources he/she chose, but also be able to select the information that will be the most relevant to his/her investigation.
Understand and Analyze Perspective Row: The report takes into account multiple points of view in order to connect the ideas these perspectives share in common and draw differences in order to prove the point made (persuade).
Apply Conventions: It is important to always cite your sources in APA Format for this AP Seminar Class.
Apply Conventions: The report has few grammatical mistakes, but most importantly the written style is appropriate for the audience it is addressed to.
It is easy to see how Sample A has the highest score overall because of the high level of vocabulary, the evidence used is from reliable sources, it has in text citations and a resource page with the correct format (APA). In addition, it has few grammatical mistakes and it includes few points of view, obviously trying to persuade their point (it even has a recommendation page). In Sample B it also seems that the author did a lot of research in order to include relevant facts/statistics. However, the resource page has a few APA format mistakes and the word choice as well as the grammar is average. Sample C's word choice make me think that a middle schooler is the author. In addition, it repeats words such as "important" many times, and there is no explanation following the numerous quotes the author used in his/her paper. Last but not least, the resource page has many errors regarding the APA Format, such as centering the title and putting in italics the publisher.
Samples are not necessarily using APA format...they may use Chicago or MLA style.
DeleteUnderstand and analyze context: The investigation's issue is complex and it has a variety of reliable sources.
ReplyDeleteUnderstand and analyze argument: there's understanding on the validity and reasoning of the argument, the evidence can be presented by explanation or through the use of reasoning and conclusions.

ReplyDeleteRow 1: you get maximum points for this row if you clearly state your area of investigation and use various reliable and appropriate sources and it has a clear significance
Row 2: you get maximum points in this row if you have and demonstrate a clear reasoning of the topic and its arguments
Row 3: you can get maximum points if you can correctly evaluate the credibility of the sources though direct explanation of by using them purposefully
Row 4: you can get maximum points if you discuss a range of perspectives and find a relevant connection between them
Row 5: you can get maximum points if most of your report is correctly structured, written and if it is accurate and consistent
Row 6: you get maximum points if you are able to clearly communicate with the audience or reader and there are very few grammatical errors
I think that the IRR essay that was the highest graded was the first one, Sample A. This essay was titled "Worldwide Legalization of Rhino Horn Trade: The Political Considerations". The second highest graded essay from the three was Sample B, titled "Environmental Impacts of War". Lastly the essay that was the lowest graded was Sample C titled "Cyberbullying". It think the first essay was the highest one graded since it was well structured and it gave very accurate information; it had many reliable sources as well. The second essay was not as well structured as the first one, but it gave accurate information and cited various sources but I don't think they were as reliable as the ones in the first essay. Finally I think that the third essay was the lowest graded since it only used one source and it didn't have a consistent or a very good structure throughout.

ReplyDeleteIn order to fully assess a research report to the best of our ability an IRR Rubric is indeed needed. The rubric is highly important since it allows or helps us identify what characteristic must be evaluated and what elements is the paper lacking to incorporate. The rubric consists of six grading points. First, understanding and analyzing the context, in order to do so we must check if the report includes well research information that helps explain the complexity of an issue on a large scale. Second, understand and analyze an argument, to evaluate such grading point make sure the report demonstrates a valid reasoning as well as evidence the support its claim. Third, evaluating the sources and evidence, check credibility of sources and relevance of information. Evaluate the understanding and analysis of perspectives as well by looking into the range of perspectives discussed through the report. Lastly but no least examine applied conventions, such grading point consists of two parts: make sure the report attribute all cities accurately and secondly, acknowledge if the report communicates clearly with the reader.
ReplyDeleteAs I read through the IRR sample essays I was able to acknowledge which one had the highest and lowest quality. IRR sample A was without a doubt the superior sample. The “worldwide legalization of Rhino Horn Trade” was a well researched and written report that accomplished to incorporate a wide range of perspectives regarding political points of view. It’s bibliography was accurate and arguments were developed through a valid line of reasoning. Sample A was then succeed by sample B, “Environmental Impacts of War”. The report accomplished to include tons of evidence (statistics) and well-argumented claims. The implications of the problem were added as well in order to convey the reader or make them realize the magnitude of such issue. Ultimately we have IRR sample C which as of my opinion had the lowest quality. In the research paper the author repeated himself far too much which further on confused the reader.
Row 1- It is expected to prove your information and explain why there is more to talk about the topic.
ReplyDeleteRow 2- It is expected to fully understand why the argument has been stated, and context behind it.
Row 3- It is expected to not only site your sources, but prove that your sources are reliable.
Row 4- It is expected to showcase a variety of perspectives and their connections between each other.
Row 5- All sources are cited in their proper way, and the bibliography matches the sources used in the text.
Row 6- It is expected to write clearly avoiding any grammatical errors.
My reports on this course are expected to be with very high standards. I as a student am expected to clearly understand the topic which not only one point of view, but every point of view that there is about the topic. My writing in reports and essays should be complex which a clear understanding of the topics. A high complexity of words should be used in my writings. Now, going on with the IRR, the first essay talked about how there is a huge problem with the trafficking of rhinos all over the world. It clearly states the different perspectives depending of the government or country involved in the issue. Some countries want to allow this type of actions to take place, while other countries find this actions completely illegal. The second essay talked about the environmental problems that wars cause and have caused throughout history. I found this a very interesting topic, since no one really took this aspect into consideration in earlier years. Finally, the last article talked about cyberbullying and how it is affecting kids. I found this article pretty basic, since there wasn't any new information for me. I would rate the article from high, being the one about wars, medium, being the one about rhino trading, and low the one of cyberbullying. All articles seemed to have very reliable sources of information which made the reader confident about the authors information. I didn't like how the first article about rhinos was written. There was an excess of information all over the paper. Many things and ideas repeated. The third article about cyberbullying was also very basic since it used normal words and primary school data.
Understand and Analyze Context- It is important to have a broad research question in which a variety of information can be added and proved with reliable sources.
ReplyDeleteUnderstand and Analyze Argument- It is expected for the student to have absolute knowledge of the topic so that the argument can be clearly explained.
Evaluate Sources and Evidence- It is essential for the student to choose relevant sources, and prove the credibility of them.
Understand and Analyze Perspective- It is crucial for the student to investigate multiple perspectives regarding the issue, and connect them with understanding.
Apply Conventions- It is important for all the references to be cited properly, which means in APA format.
Apply Conventions- The organization of information, as well as the format needs to follow the guidelines.
After reading the 3 sample essays through the weekend, I graded them regarding my criteria (my criteria is based of information learned at the AP Seminar class). Sample A, can easily be described as the most relevant and complex essay. It contains a broad vocabulary, and has in text citations. The APA format is correctly followed. However, I believe that the author needed to connect more perspectives of countries, not just South Africa and Vietnams. Sample B, also contains a broad idea of the issue. However, it contains several writing mistakes, but its sufficient facts supported the essay’s argument. Finally, Sample C was not what I expected from sample essays delivered in my AP Seminar class. They lack of extended vocabulary. Instead, the author used words repeatedly through the writing. To conclude, the line of reasoning of his/her ideas didn’t seem appropriate.
Understand and Analyze Context Row: Clear and specific research question, although somewhat of a broad scope.
ReplyDeleteUnderstand and Analyze Argument Row: The author needs to understand the information he/she in including in the article in order to know how it supports his argument.
Evaluate Sources and Evidence Row: They need to choose evidence that is both credible and reliable and that is also relevant to the topic.
Understand and Analyze Perspective Row: The paper needs to have different points of view in order to draw out a reliable response that takes into account every angle.
Apply Conventions: It is important to always cite your sources in APA, MLA Format or Chicago style.
Apply Conventions: Adequate writting style for the purpose of the research paper.
During the weekend I had to read three essays. One regarding the worldwide rhino horn trade, another involving the environmental consquences of war and another involving cyberbullying. In my opinion, the first essay, the one about the worldwide rhino horn trade, was the one which was better written. It included relevant information from different points of view (South Africa, China, Vietnam etc.) and compiled it masterfully withou the information seeming clunky or forced. The facts that were included just seemed to flow one after another without looking like a bullet list. The worst of the three was definately the essay on cyberbullying. It wasn't neccesairly bad, but the author did tend to repeat the information several times, and the flow of the essay wasn't as graceful as it was in the other essays.
