Write a 10 rows reflection on what you learned today (QUEST, arguments, Toulmin analysis)

  1. In the QUEST activity that we did today in class, i had the opportunity to learn about the letter "S" which stands for synthesizing ideas. I gain the knowledge that people need to be more open minded in order to combine ideas or arguments to make them stronger. People need to admit if another persons idea is better than theirs, or true. Many times people are very bias over their thoughts. It is also very important to know how to join ideas without plagiarism. As homework, I read how arguments are formed and their supporting details which make the argument strong. I read a very interesting article about how women are used almost as objects when labelled as beauty queens. This type of cases start of when girls are under age and people even start using them as sexual figures at their early years. The comments that were aside from the article helped me realize how the author uses her special techniques to persuade the reader. The author firmly believes in an idea and we try to convince the readers throughout her words. Finally, I learned about the Toulmin Analysis. This type of analysis is based on arguments that are followed up by proves of why you are saying is true. I gained knowledge through the fact that many people think that just by giving evidence you are going to persuade people. Apart from evidence people need to show background information, state objectives, and answer the reasons why people don't believe in what you are saying.

Today in class, we learned about the QUEST framework, which helps develop critical thinking skills and teaches how to create connections. Each letter of the acronym stands for a different point that will help you improve these skills, and they each talk about something different. I got to analyze the letter S more in depth, and this letter teacher us how to synthesize ideas; how to correctly connect evidence with claims, how they would best support the argument, among others. I also learned about arguments, which is a way for people to express their ideas and perspectives. Arguments are backed up by claims, as well as evidence to prove these claims correct. In teams, we created an argument about which ever topic we wanted and backed it up with claims in order to learn how to create one. As homework, we were assigned to read about the Toulmin analysis, which is a different, and some view it as more effective, way in which the person creating the argument has to think of different factors in order to make a better argument that is more efficient in convincing the audience that his/her point of view is correct. Some of these factors include the audience, counter arguments, explaining background values and more. This type of analysis is considered to be more effective than the classic form, since it is more complex and considers the audience and how to convince them more in depth.

  3. Today in class we read about the QUEST framework. I learned that in order to become a better critical thinker and learn the most out of a situation you must follow those steps. For example, you need to ask yourselves multiple questions to know where you are standing and what you want to learn. You must ask yourself whether or not the author is biased and if his writings are credible. Synthesising information is very important for connecting the right evidence with your claims. I got to know about the Toulmin analysis by reading an article. It was interesting for me to see how in order to write a more credible argument you must follow steps I did not know existed. For the Toulmin process you must state a thesis, add claims and evidence, give a warrant to convince the audience, give a counter argument to give credibility, a rebuttal to show how the counter argument is falser than true and conclude by stating the thesis again. I got to read an argument and check the comments made that helped me understand the process of writing an essay with credible arguments.

  4. The quest framework studied during today’s lesson was indeed remarkably beneficial and constructive. Through this activity I was capable of creating a wider concept concerning a quest’s process which involves not only an extensive research but a deep analysis regarding any complex issue or topic whatsoever. The framework also stated how we must be able to present and respond inquires, evaluate several perspectives, synthesize ideas and transmit our message based on our audience or context. Later on in the day I learned about the Toulmin method which proposes a six part argument instead of the three classic one. Such method consists of: a claim which is a well reasoned statement that is presented to the audience, grounds or evidence that are used to support the argument, and warrants to explain how information is logically connected. The method also includes a backing to show the reasoning of the warrant and ensure its reliability, qualifiers to increase the statement's strength and ultimately counter-arguments along with rebuttal to incorporate multiple perspectives and clarify why they are wrong. Mariah Jackson's Toulmin argument, for instance, can be shown as an epitome of Toulmin's method since it incorporates all the previous elements.

  5. Today I learned about the QUEST framework, that helps to understand more easily the why and how about reading and synthesizing. I got letter Q, which basically stands up for questioning and asking yourself why do you want to learn about the topic, what do you already know about the topic, and what you want to learn about the topic in question. For me, this are normally very easy questions to answer, as I always like to learn more about anything, even about things that I might not be that particularly interested in, like art. That doesn't mean I actively search for texts to learn about topics like art, that means that if presented the opportunity, I always choose to learn, regardless of the topic. We also read about the Toulmin analysis, which is something I had already seen in AP Language and composition, but nevertheless, it is always good to review things.

  6. Today in class, I learned what the initials "QUEST" mean regarding AP Seminar. Using a word and breaking its initials apart was a good way for me to remember and understand the concept of how to respond when presented with an argument. Now that I know the importance of not only evaluating all perspectives but also questioning the author and work as a team in order to understand better and synthesize what we just read/saw. In addition, I learned that there is not only the traditional way of creating an argument, but also something called the Toulmin analysis. According to this method, it is important to not only provide evidence for your argument but also provide warrants and qualifiers in order to establish a common ground with the public. I also read about how crucial it was to rebuttal your argument; provide other points of view but then convince the reader why that point of view is incorrect and why you are accurate. Last but not least, reading an example of a Toulmin Argument helped me to really comprehend what the article meant.

  7. In today’s lesson we learned in an interesting way, some aspects that support the base of AP Seminar. The word “QUEST” was created putting together the initials of some principles that need to be known. This method was compelling to me, since it is easy for me to have in mind these 5 needed steps for me to succeed in this class. I now know that after seeking for deep research on a topic or issue, before constructing, I need to undergo through a process of analysis. Over this process of analysis, I need to have a clear perspective, but as well I need to consider many others for me to be able to connect the point of views and begin a fair evaluation. On the other hand, I also got to acknowledge through an article the steps to strengthen your argument for it to be way more credible. This steps are part of a process called Toulmin. The Toulmin method of writing includes giving reliability to the audience, providing other points of view, counterarguments to demonstrate why they are wrong, as well as giving qualifiers to support the writing. I think this way is more convincing since it gives credibility to the audience, which are the people you are addressing.
